Launching a Powerful Year of Youth Advocacy
          September 12, 2025

The 2025–2026 school year is off to a strong and inspiring start for SWAT in Indian River County. We are honored to continue working alongside our dedicated and passionate advisors: Ms. Lateshia Henry at Gifford Middle School and Mrs. Julie Thompson at Indian River Charter High School. Their leadership and commitment to youth empowerment continue to be a driving force behind the success of our local SWAT chapters.

Club Expo Success at Indian River Charter High School
On August 29, 2025, SWAT had a fantastic turnout at the Indian River Charter High School Club Expo, where students showed great interest in joining the movement to fight against tobacco use and vaping. The enthusiasm and engagement from students reaffirm the importance of peer-led education and advocacy in shaping a healthier future.

Educating Youth on the Dangers of Tobacco and Vaping
SWAT members are committed to raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaping devices. These products are aggressively marketed to youth and often falsely perceived as harmless. Through peer education, school presentations, and community outreach, SWAT empowers students to make informed choices and become advocates for change.
Key focus areas this year include:
- Dispelling myths about vaping and nicotine addiction
- Promoting tobacco-free lifestyles and environments
- Encouraging youth leadership in public health advocacy
- Supporting local and statewide tobacco prevention initiatives
Call to Action: Expand SWAT Across Indian River County
We are actively seeking new club advisors at middle and high schools throughout Indian River County. If you are an educator or staff member passionate about youth health and leadership, we invite you to contact us about starting a SWAT chapter at your school.
Additionally, we are working to establish a Community SWAT Club for students who attend schools without a current chapter or are homeschooled. This club will provide opportunities for youth to engage in advocacy, participate in events, and connect with like-minded peers.
