Tobacco Free Partnership of Indian River County Updates
March 13, 2026

Partnership Capacity Assessment
In January, members completed a review of the Partnership Capacity Assessment to ensure the coalition continues to operate effectively, identify strengths, and prioritize opportunities for growth.

Monitoring of Mobile Tobacco Shops
The partnership continues ongoing surveillance for mobile tobacco shops within Indian River County. Monitoring remains a key strategy for protecting youth and reducing access to tobacco products in non-traditional retail environments.

Poster Contest Progress
Further planning took place on the countywide Poster Contest, with the goal of communicating the tobacco-free school policy clearly to all students, staff, and visitors across school campuses. The team is currently coordinating with the School District regarding poster placement guidelines and approval for posting within district facilities. The contest is likely to launch next school year, as to not interfere and be confused with a currently running bus safety poster contest.

Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT)
A new SWAT Community Club has officially launched, with its first meeting held at the Skate Factory. This expansion creates additional opportunities for youth advocacy and community engagement. Additionally, the new Making Waves SWAT initiative was introduced, aimed at elevating youth leadership and expanding local tobacco prevention efforts.

Op-Ed for Smoke-Free Ordinances
The partnership reviewed an Op-Ed written by Dr. Brooke Hall, advocating for smoke-free parks and beaches ordinances in:Vero Beach, Sebastian, Fellsmere, Orchid, and Indian River Shores. Members also discussed additional publications and media outlets to approach for broader distribution of the Op-Ed.

Increasing Cessation Access
Members explored opportunities to collaborate with local facilities to enhance access to tobacco cessation resources for residents throughout the county.

Bylaws Review
Updated bylaws were distributed and reviewed to ensure continued transparency, alignment, and effective governance within the partnership.

Looking Ahead
As we move forward into the next quarter, the Tobacco Free Partnership of Indian River County remains committed to strengthening community health, elevating youth voices, and advancing effective policies that protect every resident. Together, we continue building momentum toward a cleaner, safer, and truly tobacco-free future for Indian River County.
